Family activities to get the blood pumping and the kids outside

It’s spring, and the warmer weather is on its way. Now is the perfect time to start planning some fun outdoor activities for your family that reduces screen time and gets them outside into fresh air and spring sunshine.

We know that, in most cases, things don’t happen on the spur of the moment. Thoughtful planning needs to consider things like budget, travel time, length of activity, and working in and around the work, school, and weekend chores.

Rather than tell you about all the usual things like going for walks and bike riding or hitting the beach or park, etc., we’ve opted to highlight some unusual fun activities for the family that you may or may not be aware of. And while some cost money (not much, though), others are completely free, and all are designed to help your family be active.

We’ve selected the ones we’d love to do, but many more cool activities can be found on the local site Glam Adelaide.

Funtastic family activities

  • Walking with purpose: Okay, we did say that going for walks is a bit ho-hum, but what about walking with a purpose? Try geocaching, history walks, explorer trails, wetland tours, etc. And wherever you go, be sure to support local and reward everyone at a local cafĂ©.
  • Kids do dinner: A friend gets her kids to plan a dinner, write a shopping list, and then they trundle off to the Adelaide Central Market to get everything. They buy all the stuff keeping to a budget while she supervises. Then it’s back home to cook up a storm. Oh, and they also set the table and do the cleaning up as well.
  • Chuck a Frisbee®: Yes, it’s still popular. In fact, so popular that there is now frisbee golf or disc golf as it’s called, which is getting a huge following. There’s a course set up in the Adelaide Parklands, so why not have a go?
  • Dance offs: They’re a thing. Family dance offs, relatives, friends, and neighbours. Create categories and give small prizes. Most outrageous moves, best impersonation, worst dancer, most uncoordinated, the list goes on. Plan an afternoon with a few drinks and nibbles.
  • Climbing: Where do we start? There are tree climbs, indoor rock climbing, that Mega Adventure structure in West Beach, and you can even do supervised rock climbing and abseiling in Onkaparinga Gorge and Morialta National Park. And if you really want to get the heart pumping, what about RoofClimb at Adelaide Oval?
  • Mini golf: Everyone wants to brag about a hole-in-one. There are many mini golf courses across the suburbs, or you can go compact and play at Holey Moley in Hindmarsh Square. Or for something to expand your golfing skills with the family, there are many 9-hole Par 3 golf courses in Adelaide.
  • Hula Hooping: Have you still ‘got’ it? Strut your stuff in front of the kids and see how many hoops you can add before collapsing in a heap.
  • Doggo meet ups: Don’t just take your pooch for a walk, take them to one of the many dog parks springing up around your area. There’s a fantastic one in Glengowrie. Better still, join a Facebook group for your breed and take your pup along to meet with others of their kind.
  • Make a splash: The Marion Outdoor Pool opens soon for lap swimming, pool birthday parties, casual swimming, and pool play dates. Or just take the family along for a day out on the water slides, water park and pool. Bookings essential.
  • Bounce: If you don’t have a trampoline at home and the kids have energy to burn, Bounce Trampoline Park in Marleston is your savior. Stacks of activities for everyone that’ll really get the blood pumping!
  • Kayaking or canoeing: The weather is getting warmer and is perfect for paddling. Be it in a canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or a wave ski, find a nice flat stretch of water and go for it but don’t forget your lifejacket!
  • Escape rooms: Give your mind a workout as well as your body. Escape rooms are popular with families to match wits with each other while trying to decipher the clues to getting out of the room. Different adventures, scenarios, and skill levels. Can you beat the clock?
  • Segway Tours: Discover Glenelg’s foreshore or Adelaide’s riverbank district with a difference. A Segway is a great family activity to take in the best of Glenelg or Adelaide’s stunning riverbank precinct. Or venture further to the Barossa and do a Winery Segway Tour at Seppeltsfield.

These are just the tip of the iceberg of the unusual things you can do around Adelaide to get amongst the fresh air. We’re sure there’s much more, so ask your network of family and friends if they know of any great fun, outdoorsy things you can be doing and give it a whirl.
