Unleashing your inner creative

It’s said that everyone has a creative side; you just need to discover your calling.

People are driven to explore their creativity by a combination of internal and external factors. Some common themes include the desire for self-expression and discovery, problem-solving and innovation, learning and growth, and the need for an escape from boredom.

Creating for the sake of play and enjoyment can also be a powerful motivator, as can exposure to other creative works and individuals. Others may be motivated by the challenge of creating something new, recognition for their work, or the opportunity to positively impact the world. Even Albert Einstein is noted as saying, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

Working with your hands, manipulating materials, making something tangible, or using your mind can all be incredibly satisfying and provide a sense of accomplishment. What’s also apparent is that discovering and fostering your inner creator is a wonderful way to relax, bring down your stress levels, and calm your soul by doing something you love.

Take a look at some of the innovative ways we’ve discovered to release your inner creator.

  • Drawing and Painting: From sketching with pencils to wielding a brush, visual arts offer a vast spectrum for self-expression. You can explore different styles, mediums (watercolours, acrylics, etc.), and subjects, letting your imagination run wild. There are even activities like Paint & Picasso, where creativity is explored in a fun group setting with a wine or two for extra inspiration.
  • Photography: Capturing the world around you through a lens is a popular creative outlet. Experiment with different compositions, lighting, and editing techniques to create unique and memorable images. Of course, the subject matter is entirely up to you. You can determine what you want to shoot, whether traditional or abstract.
  • Digital Art: With readily available software and tools, digital art allows you to create illustrations, animations, and graphic designs using a computer or tablet. It’s a versatile option for expressing your creativity in the digital realm.
  • Knitting and Crocheting: These activities allow you to create cozy garments, accessories, and home decor items using yarn and needles or hooks. They offer a sense of accomplishment and the joy of seeing your projects come to life.
  • Jewellery Making: Stringing beads, working with metal, or incorporating other materials, jewellery making lets you design and craft unique pieces that reflect your style. Not to mention, if others show an interest, there’s always the capacity to expand it into a profitable little sideline
  • Paper Crafting: From origami and scrapbooking to card making and paper collage, this broad category offers endless possibilities for creating with paper. It’s a budget-friendly option with diverse techniques to explore.
  • Music: Playing an instrument, singing, or composing music are fulfilling ways to express yourself creatively. You can join a band, choir, ensemble or perform solo, enjoying the power of musical expression. Remember, you’re never too old to learn to play a musical instrument.
  • Dance: From ballet and ballroom to hip-hop and contemporary, dance allows you to move your body creatively and interpret music through physical expression. Joining a dance class or creating your own routines can be immensely rewarding.
  • Acting: Whether on stage or in front of the camera, acting lets you embody different characters and tell stories. You can join a theatre group, take acting classes, or even create your own short films or social media videos.
  • Creative Writing: From poetry and short stories to novels and scripts, creative writing allows you to explore your imagination and craft narratives that engage readers. It’s a powerful tool for expressing personal stories and ideas.
  • Journaling: Likewise, writing down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a journal can also be a therapeutic and creative outlet. It allows you to reflect on your life, process emotions, and capture memories in a personal way.
  • Woodworking/Carpentry/Furniture Making/Restoration: Working with wood allows you to create beautiful and functional items, from simple shelves to intricate furniture pieces. Restorations breathe new life into old objects, adding a sustainable and sentimental touch.
  • Metalwork/Smithing: Shaping and manipulating metal offers a different challenge, allowing you to create tools, decorative pieces, and even jewellery. Smithing, specifically, involves heating and hammering metal, adding a historical and artisanal feel to the craft.
  • Gardening: Cultivating plants and creating a flourishing garden combines creativity with the joy of nurturing life. You can experiment with different plants, layouts, and design principles, transforming your outdoor space into a personal haven.
  • Papermaking: A time-honoured craft that offers creative control with unique textures, colours, and the ability to embed objects. The tactile process can be therapeutic and sustainable using natural, recycled, and unconventional materials. Handmade paper is versatile and can be used for various purposes, such as stationery or wearable art.
  • Printmaking: Using diverse techniques such as woodcut, linocut, screen printing, etching, and mono-printing, printmaking involves chance and experimentation, leading to exciting results. Printmaking allows you to create multiple copies of your artwork, making it accessible to a broader audience. Prints can be used on various surfaces and utilised for collaborative projects.

For the intellectually curious, many creative outlets engage the mind and challenge you to think outside the box.

  • Creative problem-solving: Involves applying creativity to find solutions to non-routine and often complex problems, using lateral thinking and challenging assumptions. It enhances cognitive flexibility, critical thinking, and communication skills while boosting confidence and resourcefulness. Activities include research projects, escape rooms, design thinking workshops, hackathons, cryptic puzzles, and think tanks.

Whatever creative pursuit takes your fancy, you can often find workshops, classes, or meetups where you can learn the basics and get started. With some basic tools, dedication, and a willingness to ‘have a crack’, you can unlock the world of creativity and satisfaction offered by any of these activities.
